Why is the incoterms FOB Japan when I chose ship with DHL which is a door to door service?

The incoterms are set as FOB Japan, meaning the responsibility for the goods transfers to the buyer once the shipment leaves Japan. Customs clearance is the buyer’s responsibility. However, if you choose to ship with DHL, a door-to-door service, DHL will handle the entire shipping process, including customs clearance and delivery to your address.

Please note that we are not responsible for the import regulations of the destination country. If your parcel is selected for customs inspection and additional documentation is required, we will assist as much as possible, but we cannot guarantee a resolution. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to manage any customs procedures, and import duties or taxes are not included in the shipping cost.

Insurance Responsibility in FOB Shipments
In an FOB shipment, insurance is also the buyer's responsibility.

Shipment via DHL:

  • Standard Liability: Covers up to part of the shipment’s value in case of direct loss or damage while in transit, at no additional cost.
  • Additional Insurance: Optional insurance provided by DHL, with a fee of JPY 2,500 or 1.20% of the insured value (whichever is higher, non-taxable). The insured value must reflect the true value of the goods.

Shipment via EMS - Japan Post Office:

  • Standard Liability: Covers damage claims up to 20,000 JPY at no charge.
  • Additional Insurance: Optional additional insurance is available for higher coverage.
